Sperm Washing

fertility. This procedure is different from In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedures, which are done by injecting the sperm into the eggs in in vitro condutions (in laboratory condutions). In this procedure, the healthy and motile sperms are concentrated in a special media (Human Tubal Fluid) which nourishes and preserves them for easier fertilization under in vivo (natural) condutions. After washing, the sperm specimen is placed high, into the top of the uterus (close to tubes and eggs), through a catether (a flexible plastic tube inserted into the cervix. The procedure is called the IUI (Intrauterine Insemination). By this procedure, the small specimen bypasses the cervical mucus and gets into the fallopian tubes without loosing the time for survival of the healthy sperm. The woman is treated by hormones to pick the day of ovulation for insemination procedure. The specimen prepared by the laboratory, should be in the doctor’s Office in maximum 30 minutes and at body temperature, to be injected into the uterus. The patient may go back to her normal activities after the injection (if otherwise is not told by her doctor). This treatment is preferred in women whose at least one of the tubes are open. If the couples have been diagnosed with serious infertility problems, this procedure is not applicable.
Interpretation: The pregnancy rate over 3-4 well timed cycles varies from 20-60% depending on the cause of infertility.
Sample: Semen (With sexual abstinens for 2-7 days and no alcohol use at least one day before the specimen day).
Working day: Everyday
Result Time: 90 minutes after the specimen.
