Creatinine (CK)

Creatinine is the final breakdown product of the energy-supplying molecule in the muscles. After the use of this energy-providing molecule (ATP-Adenosine triphosphate), the released creatinine molecule is found in the blood circulation at certain rates according to the daily metabolic energy consumption standard of the person. Nearly all of the creatinine is cleared from the blood by the kidneys. It is often therefore used in the measurement of kidney function by measuring the kidney's ability to remove this molecule. That is, it is a measure of the glomerular filtration rate of the kidney. Creatinine is found in urine, and blood creatinine and measurement of creatinine in 24-hour urine are expressed as ml/min/body surface area with a formulation and calculation that includes the personal body surface area of the kidney's filtration rate (Glomerular Filtration rate-GFR). This test is called the Creatinine Clearance Test. However, if the doctor deems the urine sample at certain times appropriate instead of 24-hour urine collection, shorter-term urine samples may also be accepted.
Interpretation:
This test is used as an indicator of how well the kidneys are clearing creatinine from the blood. The results should be interpreted by the doctor, taking into account age and gender. If creatinine alone is high in the blood, it indicates impaired renal function and further clinical investigations may be required. Recently, it has been reported that high creatinine in newborns can be considered as a bacteremia indicator and high in men can be considered as a risk of prostate cancer.
Sample: Venous blood from arm. A 24-hour urine sample or as the doctor deems appropriate. It does not require hunger.
Working day: Every day
Result Time: Same day 18:00
