Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies(ANCA): pANCA

ANCAs are a group of antibodies that attack healthy cells known as neutrophils (a type of white blood cell). This is an autoimmune disease, where the antibodies attack one’s own neutrophils instead of foreign bacteria or viruses. There are two kinds of ANCA (pANCA; attacks a protein called myeloperoxidase, cANCA; attacks a protein called, Proteinase 3). This test, shows which of these antibodies the patient has, to help in the treatment.
Interpretation: The results are interpreted qualitatively. Presence of any of these antibodies may cause a disorder known as autoimmune vasculitis which causes inflamation and swelling of the blood vessels. One of the types of autoimmune vasculitis is Granulomatosis with polyangiitis(GPA) which mostly affect lungs, kidneys and sinuses. Microscopic polyangiitis(MPA) can affect several organs in the body, including the lungs, kidneys, nervous system, and skin. Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) affects the skin and lungs. It often causes asthma.Polyarteritis Nodosa(PAN) which affects the heart, kidneys, skin, and central nervous system.
